The Royal Australian Navy has issued a new chart for the

port of Hobart 100 years after the Royal Navy's original chart

of the area was first published in July, 1863·

The Minister for the Navy, Senator Gorton, said today

that the new chart has been produced by the R.A.N.'s Hydrographic

Service. It was based on data provided by local authorities, who

were responsible for detailed p.ort information, and on a recent

survey of the Harbour approaches by H.M.A.S. BASS, under the

command of Lieutenant G.T. Kennedy, R.A.N.

The modern chart, prepared with the aid of the latest

electronic survey equipment, entirely replaced the one based

on the Admiralty publication'of a century ago.

Senator Gorton said it would take at least twenty-five

years to complete modern charts of the Australian coastline.

Large sections of the coast had never been surveyed, and in other

areas the original charts of the explorer-surveyors were still

the only maps available. ' · .

The Royal Australian Navy's Hydrographic Service was

working on a comprehensive charting programme, drawn up on a

priority basis following consultations with representatives of

Federal and State Governments and shipping interests.

He said that a new arrangement which came into force last

month between Australia, Britain and New Zealand would increase

liaison in hydrographic charting, and contribute to a faster

and more comprehensive service of navigational charts. The

agreement clearly defined charting responsibilities for the three
