STATEMENT BY THE MINISTER FOR THE INTERIOR, MR, FREETH

■ THE SECRETARY-GENERAL OF THE WORLD METEOROLOGICAL ORGANISATION,

MR. D.A. DAVIES, WILL BE VISITING CANBERRA TOMORROW FOR DISCUSSIONS WITH

THE MINISTER FOR THE INTERIOR, ME, FREETH, UNDER WHOSE ADMINISTRATION

.THE INTERNATIONAL ANTARCTIC ANALYSIS CENTRE AND THE BUREAU OF METEOROLOGY

OPERATE-THROUGHOUT AUSTRALIA.

MR. DAVIES, WHO IS IN AUSTRALIA FOR A THREE-DAY VISIT, WILL BE

ACCOMPANIED BY THE DIRECTOR OF METEOROLOGY IN AUSTRALIA, MR, L.J. DWYER,

AS SECRETARY-GENERAL, MR. DAVIES DIRECTS THE PERMANENT SECRETARIAT

WHICH HAS ITS HEADQUARTERS IN GENEVA. HE COMMENCED HIS CAREER IN THE

BRITISH METEOROLOGICAL' OFFICE AND WAS LATER DIRECTOR OF THE EAST AFRICAN

METEOROLOGICAL SERVICE, HE WAS APPOINTED TO HIS PRESENT POSITION IN 1955.

THERE ARE NOW 102 MEMBER STATES OF THE WORLD METEOROLOGICAL

ORGANISATION, AUSTRALIA BEING ONE OF THE FOUNDATION MEMBERS. IT IS THE

HIGHEST MEMBERSHIP OF ANY OF TEE UNITED NATIONS SPECIALISED AGENCIES.
