STATEMENT BY THE MINISTER FOR LABOUR AND NATIONAL SERVICE

HON. WILLIAM McMAHON. M,P.

STEVEDORING INDUSTRY LEVY

Exemption from payment of the stevedoring industry levy

in respect of waterside workers permanently employed in Australian

ports will be provided for under legislation about to be introduced

into the Parliament.

The Minister for Labour and National Service (Mr.McMahon)

in announcing this today said that the levy which currently stood at

2/6 per man hour worked by waterside workers provided funds to cover

the administrative services of the Australian Stevedoring Industry

Authority and the payment by it of attendance money and the cost of

annual leave, sick leave and. public holiday pay. In fact, the

Authority did not disburse any funds under these heads in respect

of permanently employed waterside workers and employers were therefore

being, charged for services not received.

Mr, McMahon said that about 1% of the 22,000 odd

waterside workers were employed, permanently on weekly hiring. The

new legislation would, be in keeping with the Government's desire to

encourage permanent employment on the waterfront.
