BaLLOON ECUM) AT COB^R

Statement by the Minister for Supply, The &on„ xilan 8 0 Hulme

The balloon found at Cobar has been identified as a

meteorological balloon belonging to the Department of Supply.

It broke loose from its moorings at a remote range

instrumentation post in South Australia.

The balloon is a barrage balloon of World War II vintage,

and eminently suitable for carrying meteorological instruments.

It broke loose during the recent heavy storms in

South Australia. I have arranged to have the balloon

collected and returned.

I am taking action to ensure that there will be no

repetition of this occurrence,.
