. Sydney and Melbourne will soon .see Australia's biggest

military band when the Royal Australian Navy stages a bands festival

in the two cities, ' ·

The Minister for the Navy, Senator Gorton, said today that

nearly one-hundred musicians from four navy bands would be brought

together for the festival during the next few' weeks. He said the

musicians would, blend together not only as the biggest military band

but also the most versatile. Its wide range of instruments gave it

scope as a traditional military band or a symphony orchestra.

The massed bands would comprise musicians from Flinders

Naval Depot in Victoria, from the Naval Air Station, H.M.A.S. ALBATROSS

from the Fleet, and from the Eastern Area Band, Sydney. . '

Senator Gorton said the four bands would mass in Sydney

towards the end of this month and would be blended into one unit by

the Director of Music from Flinders Nava,l Depot, Lieutenant-Commander

George Hooker. ■

This was the navy's fourth bands festival, but the first

since the musicians had changed from Royal Marine style uniform to

"bell-bottoms". .

Senator Gorton said the festiva,!, in addition to enabling

the public to see and hear the navy 'musicians, was a valuable opport

unity for the bands to gain experience under the supervision of the

Director of Music.

- In the future, it was hoped to create still further opport

unities for the Navy bands to make" public appearances throughout

Australia, and in particular to go on tours of country areas.

In Sydney, the massed navy musicians will take part in

next month's Waratah Festival. They will feature in the procession

and stage a ceremonial sunset display at Garden Island. The massed

bands will also give lunch hour concerts in Hyde Dark and take part

in the Festival of Light at Tamworth.

In Victoria the bands will gix^e a Trafalgar Day display

at Flinders Naval Depot, to be attended by the Governor of Victoria.

They will also play at Flemington during the Melbourne Cup.
