OVERSEAS TELEPHONE SERVICE TO NEW ZEALAND

The Postmaster-General (Mr. Davidson) announced today that his

Department, in conjunction with the Overseas Telecommunications Commission

(Australia) and the New Zealand Post Office, had arranged for additional

radio-telephone facilities to be provided between Australia and New Zealand

to cater for the increased demand for calls0

Telephone traffic between the two countries had increased by 12#

over the past two years, Mr„ Davidson said, and over 30,000 calls a year were

now being handled* The third radio-telephone channel, which is now in

operation during the busier hours of the day, will result in a speedier

service being available < ,

.... The charge for calls to New Zealand is 12/6d. a minute, with a

minimum of three minutes.
