AIRLINES RATIONALISATION DECISION

Statement by the Minister for Civil Aviation, (.Senator Shane Paltridge)

The Airlines Rationalisation Committee has notified decisions on matters referred to the Committee by Ansett/A.N.A. and Trans Australia Airlines. The applications involve air routes to the Northern

Territory, New Guinea, and the Brisbane/Mount Isa route.

The Co-Ordinator of the Committee, (Mr. D.G. Anderson) approved an application by Ansett/A.N.A. for an extension of its Melbourne/Mildura/Broken Hill route to Alice Borings, and rejected an application by the Airline for an extension of its services to Darwin

because the route could not sustain competitive operations.

Decisions on applications by both Airlines to operate services to New Guinea were deferred pending a decision by the Government as to whether competition should be permitted on the route to Papua/New Guinea.

The Co-Ordinator found there was no necessity for drastic rationalisation on the competitive Brisbane/ Mount Isa route, but recommended discussions between the operators to secure minor economies.
