H i s t o r i a n f o r World War I was i n i t s e l f r e c o g n i t i o n o f t h e

h i g h e s t o r d e r .

D r . ΒΕλΝ, M«., B . C . L . , O x o n . , L i t t . D. M e l b . , h a s had a

d i s t i n g u i s h e d c a r e e r a s a n e w s p a p e r w r i t e r and a u t h o r . He j o i n e d

t h e s t a f f o f t h e Sydney Morning H e r a l d i n 19 0 8 , and was t h e i r

London r e p r e s e n t a t i v e from 1911 t o 1913® He was a p p o i n t e d l e a d e r

w r i t e r i n 1914, and s e r v e d a s an o f f i c i a l war c o r r e s p o n d e n t u n t i l

1919. Then he was a p p o i n t e d O f f i c i a l War H i s t o r i a n , and e d i t e d

12 v o lu m es o f t h e O f f i c i a l H i s t o r y o f A u s t r a l i a i n t h e War o f

1 9 1 4 -1 9 1 8 .

t h e name was ch an g ed t o t h e War Memorial C o m m i t te e , a n d l a t e r

s t i l l t o t h e War Memorial Board o f Management, t h e p r e s e n t t i t l e .
