Cousins and friends 1 2 1 future would "be eligible for

nomination as unassisted migrants from Italy, Greece and

other Mediterranean countries, the minister for Immigration,

Mr. Opperman, announced today.

Other relatives, fiancess and fiances and single

women aready were eligible for sponsorship, he said.

Mr. Opperman said: "The categories who may be

sponsored as unassisted settlers now will be the same for "

Mediterranean countries as for northern Europe.

"We have been progressively widening the opportunities

for residents of Australia to sponsor migration from these

countries", he said.

"Until 1363, wives, dependent children, parents, sons,

brothers and single women "were eligible for nomination.

"Since then eligibility has been extended to include

married daughters and married sisters with their husbands and

children, nephews and nieces, aged dependent relatives and

brothers-in-law and sons-in-law wishing to come out ahead

of their families.

"Now we will accept nomi>iations for cousins and friends.

"As in the past, nominations on behalf of close relatives will be accorded priority. So far. as other nominees are

concerned, we will admit the types -and numbers Australia can

successfully absorb. "

"They will be carefully selected in accordance with

health and character requirements and their ability to

contribute to Australia's economic and social development",

Mr. Opperman said. . .

"The necessary sponsorship forms may be obtained from

the Commonwealth Director of Migration in each capital city".
