. A conference to discuss the Royal Australian Navy's

hydrographic charting programme over the next five years was

held in Canberra today.

The Minister for the Navy (Mr, Chaney) said that

representatives of interested Government and private organisations

had attended. They included all State Governments, the '

Departments of Air, Army, Territories and National Development,

and shipping interests„

It was the second conference of its kind, the first

having been held in I960,

Following today's meeting, under the chairmanship of

the Deputy Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral R.I. Peek, the

Navy will complete details for its survey programme over the

next five years, ■

The R.A.N.’s Hydrographer, Captain A.H<. Cooper.,..told

today's conference that most of the busy shipping.routes in

Australia were now satisfactorily charted.

Much work remained in Tasmania, i ; . . x some areas of

Queensland, and off the coasts of the north of Western Australia,

the Northern Territory.and New Guinea.

Mr. Chaney announced last week that the R.A.N. would

survey 20,000 square miles of sea off the north-west coast of

Western Australia to establish safe routes for coastal shipping,

and for ocean-going vessels carrying iron ore from,Port Hedland.
