MEW STAGE OF NORTHERN TERRITORY BEEF ROADS CONSTRUCTION

(Statement by the Minister for Territories, the Hon. C. E. Barnes, M.P.)

Work was expected to begin late this year on construction to beef road standard of the road from Willeroe te Top Springs in the Northern Territory the Minister for Territories, Mr. C.E. Barnes, said today.

The 104 mile stretch of road would be bitumen sealed to a width of 12 feet at a cost of £ 860 ,000. .

The road would form the southern extension of the Katherine-Wilieroo beef road which was at present under construction and which was also being sealed. The Government's approval for this new work to commence would mean that the building of the roads could be co

ordinated which would not only provide continuity of work, but would ensure the best use - of available construction resources and material.

Mr. Barnes said that the total length of road from Katherine via Willeroo to Top Springs should be finished about the middle of 1967.

The new roads were part of a comprehensive beef road system in the Victoria River District which would provide direct and high standard road links for district pastoralists with the Katherine and Darwin meatworks.

The road would be of substantial economic - benefit not only to pastoralists in the Victoria River district, but to the area as a whole.

. The better access to market optlets would ·

make it economic for pastoralists to carry out herd and property improvements and thus obtain the maximum benefit from the roads. ■
