MELBOURNE COMMONWEALTH CENTRE CONTRACT.

Statement “ by the Minister for Works, Mr, Freeth.

The Minister for Works, Mr. Freeth, announced today that a

£2,090,000 contract had been let for the construction of

extensions to Stage 1 of the Commonwealth Centre in Melbourne.

The successful tenderer was Messrs. Clements Langford Pty.

Ltd., of Melbourne.

Mr. Freeth said that the office extensions, designed by

architects and engineers of the Commonwealth Department of Works,

would complete the present building. There had been some design

modifications to the building structure but the external appearance

would be similar to that of the existing building.

The extensions would provide accommodation for about 1,600

office workers»

^e said the new building was expected to be completed and ready

for occupation in about two years, This contract would complete the

first stage of the plan for the development of the centre which

would eventually accommodate most the Commonwealth Departments

now occupying other buildings in Melbourne.
