STAMP FOR ANNIVERSARY OF FIRST AIR MAIL . '

A special stamp will "be issued next year to mark the 50th anniversary

of the first official air mail flight in Australia, the Postmaster-General

(Mr. Davidson) announced today.

The mail was flown from Melbourne to Sydney in mid-July, 19M> by

Maurice Guillaux in a Bleriot monoplane. The flight established a new long

distance record for the Southern Hemisphere, and was also one of the longest .

air mail flights in the world to that time.

This pioneering flight foreshadowed the importance which air mail has

now assumed in postal and national affairs, Mr. Davidson said. In 1914»

Guillaux carried 2,000 articles - last year over three hundred million air mail

articles were carried by Australian domestic airlines, and a further forty-

three million were despatched to overseas destinations.

Mr. Davidson added that further details of the stamp would be announced

when production was further advanced. .
