STATEMENT EY THE HONOURABLE DAVID FAIRBAIRN, DFC HP, MINISTER FOR AIR

ACADEMY SCIENCE BLOCK PLANNED FOR SPACE AGE AIRMEN

One of Australia's most· modern science blocks will be officially

opened next month at the RAAF Academy, at Point Ccolc, Victoria.

The two story building is a model of efficiency necessary for

the training of Air Force officers for the Space Age,

The Minister for Air, Mr David Fairbaj.rn, said today that the

science building had cost nearly £200,000, and through its well-equipped

laboratories would pass some of the future leaders of the RAAF,

' The RAAF Academy is also linked as a college with the University

of Melbourne and is the only Service establishment in Australia which-offers

a full science degree.

The new science block is the first of a group of several large

buildings planned for the academy. When the whole complex is complete

there will be buildings for chemistry, research physics, applied science,

arts and military studies and a cadet mess.

These buildings will substantially change the skyline at RAAF

Point Cook, the first military airfield in Australia and the traditional

"home" of the Air Force.

Mr Fairbairn said the building would house the academy's

establishment for 96 cadets and will cater for the needs of the academy

in the foreseeable future.

It is of steel frame construction with reinforced concrete floors,

brick walls and a copper sheet roof.

Total floor space is 22,058 square foot, consisting of 13,034

square feat on the ground floor and 9024 square feet on the upper floor,

. The main rooms are; two physics lecture theatres, three

physics laboratories, a physics store and workroom, two mathematics classrooms

a library, staff common room, various administrative offices and cloakrooms

and toilets, —

The building is protected from fire by a thermal ala,rm system

and fire hoses.
