Thursday, 3rd February, 1994

The Minister for Consumer Affairs, Ms Jeannette McHugh, will receive tomorrow morning a major report into product safety in Australia.

Mr Jerry Moller, on behalf of the Australian Consumers Council, will hand to Ms McHugh his report, Safety In The Making : Product Safety fo r the Year 2000.

This document was written by Mr Moller, who is both a member of the Council and the Director of Research and Evaluation at the National Injury Surveillance Unit in Adelaide and part of the National Institute of Health.

Safety In The Making was itself almost two years in the making, and the ideas outlined in it were raised at the recent conference of the European Consumer Safety Organisation, evoking great interest from other nations.

The report sets out five recommendations for the Federal Government on how consumer safety can be improved through a mixture of legislative action and a new emphasis in some of the tasks undertaken by the Federal Bureau of Consumer Affairs.

Members of the Australian Consumers Councilwill also be present at the handing-over.

Copies of the report and a detailed media statement will be available at tomorrow’s meeting in conference room 1S2 on the first floor of Parliament House, beginning at 10 o’clock.
