NEWS RELEASE 77/914 27-1-77

AIR FARES BETWEEN AUSTRALIA AND JAPAN

(Statement by the Minister for Transport, the Honourable P.J. Nixon, M.P,)

The Minister for Transport, Mr Peter Nixon, said today that as a result of discussions he had had with the Japanese Minister for Transport, Mr Tamura, he was hopeful that a cheaper fare package could be offered for travel between Australia and Japan,

Mr Nixon said that the two Ministers had agreed that representatives of the two airlines, Qantas and JAL, would shortly hold discussions aimed at reaching agreement for a lower air fare between the two countries, Mr Nixon pointed out that discussions had been held on previous occasions between the two airlines and he believed there was no disagreement on the objective of introducing cheaper

fares.

"There are of course a number of issues to be discussed and resolved by the two airlines before agreement on cheaper air fares can be achieved," Mr Nixon said,

"I had very frank and detailed discussions with Mr Tamura however and as a result believe that resolution of the outstanding issues is much closer,"

Mr Nixon said that the provision of cheaper fares to and from Japan should markedly assist our tourist industry and help to further improve relations and understanding between the two countries.

Presently the lowest individual return fare Sydney/ Tokyo is $908 which compares with the lowest Sydney/Rowie fare of $979 despite the distance to Rome of 40,065 kilometres and only 22,221 kilometres to Tokyo.
