APPOINTMENT OF OFFICERS-IN-CHARGE ANTARCTIC STATIONS

The Minister for Science, Senator Webster, announced today the appointment of four men as Officers- in-Charge for the 1978 Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions (ANARE) at Australian stations on

the Antarctic continent and at Macquarie Island.

The men are Mr W.P. Barnaart of Queanbeyan (N. S. W .); Mr A.D. Gordon of Narrabeen (N. S. W .); MrP.R. Pritchard of Reservoir (Vic.) and Mr D.R. Twigg of Glenroy (Vic.). They have been appointed as 0fficers- in-Charge at Davis, Mawson, Macquarie Island and Casey respectively.

Mr Barnaart, 30, joined the Australian Customs after matriculating in Queensland in 1964. He served as a Customs Officer in Brisbane, Melbourne, Darwin, Gove and Groote Eylandt and was the Sub-Collector of Customs at Wyndham, W. A. for two years. He is attached

to the Australian Narcotics Bureau in Canberra.

Mr Gordon, 30, obtained a degree in Civil Engineering at the University of N.S.W. He worked for a number of years in structural engineering, water supply and sewerage design. He returned to the University where he qualified for a Master of Engineering Science degree

in Coastal Engineering. On completion of this degree he was employed by the Department of Public Works in the Coastal Engineering Branch where he has been involved in harbour design and beach erosion studies.

Mr,Pritchard, 30, is a Recreation Consultant with the Victorian Department of Youth, Sport and Recreation, where he has been employed for the past two years. Before this, he was a Physical and Recreational

Training Officer in the R.A.A.P. and a High School Sportsmaster in N.S.lf, He has a Diploma in Physical Education and is in his final year of a Bachelor of Applied Sciences (Human Movement) at Preston Institute

of Technology.

Mr Twigg, b9, is a Senior Technical Officer with the Department of Transport, Melbourne. He served in the Royal Australian Navy as a Radio Operator, and later obtained a Certificate of Radio Engineering. He served with ANARE on two previous expeditions as a Radio Supervisor at Macquarie Island in 1956 and at Mawson in 1958· He was awarded the Polar Medal for his services. He was later the Antarctic Division's

Senior Technical Officer, in charge of Radio Communic­ ations Services for 15.years from 1961. During this period he was involved in relief expeditions and was an Officer-in-Charge of a Summer Field Operation.
