SENATOR JANET POWELL AUSTRALIAN DEMOCRAT SENATOR FOR VICTORIA

PARLIAMENT OF AUSTRALIA · THE SENATE

P.R. NO. 89/542 CANBERRA

30 NOVEMBER, 1989

CIGARETTE ADVERTISING BAN - AN ELECTION ISSUE

Strong support from major health groups today for the Smoking and Tobacco Products Advertisements (Prohibition) Bill, which was introduced by Senator Janet Powell of the Australian Democrats, clearly ensures that the fate of the Bill will be a factor in next year's Federal election.

"Last year's Victorian election and the recent South Australian election have made it clear that what the growing number of Democrat voters do with their second preferences will be crucial in deciding who wins Government at Federal level", Senator Powell

stated.

"Clearly Australian Democrat voters will be very angry if either the Government or the Opposition cave in to the tobacco lobby against the health of Australians - especially of-young people. "

"The Australian Medical Association, National Heart Foundation, Australian Cancer Society and a wide range of other groups, will not be fobbed off by feeble excuses and dodging of the issue. Nor will the 70% of Australians who support the ban on tobacco

advertisements."

"The Opposition and Government must bear this in mind in making their decision before the Bill is debated next week", Senator Powell concluded:.
