DEMOCRATS STRONG SUPPORTERS OF CHILD CARE - POWELL

"Senator Chaney's claim that increased funding for child care is dependent on taking even more resources away from the unemployed and other disadvantaged groups is nothing but a smokescreen, "Australian Democrats Spokesperson on Social Security, Senator Janet Powell, said today.

"To contend that money has to be taken from people who are out of work, aborigines and students in order to implement their child care policy shows how little the Coalition parties have learned during their period in Opposition," Senator Powell said.

"The Government is running a $9-billion surplus, some of which could be re-directed," she said, "and the Coalition could re-think its intention to revise the Capital Gains Tax in favour of their rich mates."

Senator Powell said: "The Coalition should consider action to remove negative gearing on foreign borrowings, cut out transfer pricing and overseas tax havens and other legal lurks which the corporate takeover merchants have used to build up personal

fortunes - all Democrats policies - which would put several billions in government coffers."

"All Senator Chaney has done in attacking the Democrats is expose to further critical examination his commitment to dry, far right economic policies which are utterly heartless, uncaring and unsympathetic."

Senator Powell said: "The people of Australia have judged his party's dedication to this form of extremism, which leaves thousands of victims in its wake, at the last five elections and found them unacceptable."

"The Democrats will continue to fight hard for the Government, of whatever flavour,· to honour its responsibilities in the provision of child care, and will not accept any draconian down grad'dna of other areas of social security spending," Senator Powell

concluded."
