TAX FILE N U M B E R S Y S T E M IN T R O U B L E A L R E A D Y

The Government'll new tax file number system for avoiding taxation fraud is in trouble already, and it doesn't come into operation until 1 February.

Employment declarations, which are required by the Taxation Department for all new employees from 1 February and for all existing employees soon after that, should be available from Post O f f i c e s .

H o w e v e r , according to senator Paul M c L e a n , the Australian Democrats senator for New South Wales, the Taxation Department was not provided with enough forms to

automatically send to all Post Offices, and many missed o u t .

"The Government assured us this new system would be simple and efficient," Senator McLean s a i d . "obviously this is not the c a s e , even from the beginning. I understand Post offices in industrial areas were not sent any employment declarations

- an extraordinary omission."

Senator McLean urged employers to ring the Taxation Department and request the forms be sent to them as soon as

possible if none were available from their local Post Office.
