MEDIA RELEASE T H E S E N A T E P.R. NO. 89/395 CANBERRA

5 SEPTEMBER 1989

DEMOCRATS HAD FIRST INTERNAL OBMUDSMAN 0 *

The Acting Leader of the Australian Democrats, Senator Michael

Macklin, today corrected reports that the appointment of an

internal Ombudsman by the NSW ALP was a first for an Australian

political party. "

"At least one newspaper which reported the appointment claimed it

was a first," Senator Macklin said.

"As so often happens, the trailblazing of the Democrats was

ignored. We have had a National Ombudsman and State Ombudsmen

since the party's inception in 1977 as part of the party's

democratic framework.

"Yet again we are pleased to see one of our initiatives taken up

by another political party and we only regret that this

initiative, like so many others, has taken so long to be adopted.

Let's hope we see more such appointments," Senator Macklin

concluded.
