WINCHESTER MURDER SHOWS NEED FOR GUN CONTROL - HAINES

Senator Janine Haines, Leader of the Australian Democrats, today- expressed her distress and outrage at the murder of Australian Federal Police Assistant Commissioner Colin Winchester.

"Apart from the personal anguish caused to Assistant Commissioner Winchester's family, this murder raises yet again the need for adequate law enforcement resources in the fight against crime and for stronger gun control laws," Senator Haines said.

"The recent spate of police murders - most with all the hallmarks of criminal reprisals - reminds us of the risks taken daily by members of the police force in their efforts to protect the community from criminal activity.

"In addition to the sympathy we would all extend to Colin Winchester's family, members of the community and

Parliamentarians from all parties must acknowledge the need for better police resources and tough leigslation against misuse of firearms. Surely we do not need any more tragic incidents of this sort to guarantee that," Senator Haines concluded.
