BEING GREEN IS MORE THAN LOVING PENGUINS: COULTER

Senator John Coulter, Australian Democrat senator from South Australia, today responded to the calls by the NSW Liberal Party at the their annual convention in Sydney to the federal party to make fundamental changes to its environmental

policies.

"I wonder if the NSW Liberals understand how fundamental those changes are going to have to be" said Senator Coulter. "Saving the environment is more than using unbleached paper

and loving penguins, it is a matter of changing the economy from a growth economy to one of sustainability.

"The whole Liberal philosophy is based on unfettered economic growth. The growth paradigm assumes infinite wants and infinite technological innovation to produce more and more people and goods. It assumes that it is not only possible but desirable. Both assumptions, however, are false.

"Resources are not infinite, not least the capacity of the

environment to cope with the damage which the growing economy generates.

"The NSW Liberals' desire for a better environmental policy

is commendable but for all the wrong reasons, namely votes. The public are not ignorant, however, and will want to see more than cosmetic changes to the Liberal's philosophy and

and policies if they are to be taken seriously as a true

environmental party" Senator Coulter concluded.
