ir. PRESS TREASURER RELEASE EMBARGO

STATEMENT BY THE TREASURER, THE HON P.J. KEATING MP

TAX FILE NUMBER LEGISLATION

The Government has this evening agreed to the Opposition's request that the debate on the tax file number legislation be deferred until 1 November in order to enable the Opposition to consider further the Privacy Bill.

In agreeing to this request, the Government is mindful of the Leader of the Opposition's repeated statements of support for effective measures to attack tax abuse.

In particular, I note that his press release of 7 October 1987, which he has attached to his letter to the Prime Minister today, incorporates statements of strong support for the upgrading of the integrity of the tax file number system.

In that statement he said the Opposition would favourably consider any proposals designed to improve the use of tax file numbers for proper taxation and welfare purposes.

In developing its tax file number legislation the Government has proceeded exactly along those lines, and based on Mr Howard's public statements, we believe we are entitled to

his support.

The tax file number legislation already incorporates a number of amendments suggested by the Opposition.

Similarly, the Government will be prepared to consider any constructive suggestions put by the Opposition regarding the privacy legislation.

It is now the Government's intention that the tax file number legislation will be debated in the House of Representatives on 1 November, taken to the Senate shortly thereafter and implemented as soon as practicable after 1 November.
