PRESS (RELEASC NO. 17

TREASURER

EMBARGO IMMEDIATE RELEASE

STATEMENT BY SENATOR THE HON NICK BOLKUS MINISTER ASSISTING THE TREASURER FOR PRICES

PROPOSED TELECOM CHARGE FOR DIRECTORY ASSISTANCE

The Prices Surveillance Authority (PSA) will examine a charge which Telecom proposes to introduce next July for directory assistance. Telecom intends to apply the charge in relation

to numbers that are listed in the local telephone directory.

In a report last year on Telecom charges, the PSA observed that introduction of a charge for this service, which has customarily been provided free, is an important change that could affect many telephone users. The PSA recommended that

the charge be made subject to scrutiny by the Authority.

I have accepted that recommendation and have today declared the service concerned to be a notified service under the Prices Surveillance Act. This means that Telecom must formally notify the PSA before it can implement the charge; the PSA will then have an opportunity to examine its basis and to make a recommendation as to whether or not it is justified.
