IMPROVED TELEVISION RECEPTION PROPOSED FOR JINGELL1C AND WALWA

The Federal Minister for Transport and Communications Support, Mr Peter Morris, today invited applications for a rebroadcasting facility that will improve reception of ABC television for 300 residents at Jingellic in NSW and Walwa in Victoria.

In addition, the Minister approved a rebroadcasting facility to improve commercial television reception for both communities.

'The rebroadcasting licences announced today will make possible improved reception of the ABC service, ABAV-1 on UHF channel 56, and the commercial service, AMV-4 on UHF channel 59, to about 300 residents at Jingellic and Walwa. Viewers would need Band 5 television antennas to get the best pictures'.

Mr Morris said community interest groups from both towns had co-operated to submit a proposal to improve their reception of ABAV channel 1.

Meanwhile, Riverina and North East Victoria TV Pty Ltd, the licensee of AMV channel 4, had submitted a proposal for improving reception of its own service at Walwa and Jingellic, which had now been approved.

Applications for the ABC television and rebroadcasting licence will be received by the Australian Broadcasting Tribunal which will hold a public inquiry before granting the licence to the most suitable applicant.

Technical characteristics of the proposed self-help rebroadcasting facility are attached.
