HAND AND THE MINISTER FOR TRANSPORT AND COMMUNICATIONS. SENATOR

SATELLITE SERVICES FOR IMPARJA

The licensee of the Central Zone Remote Commercial Television

Service (RCTS), Imparja Television Pty Ltd, will be able to

commence long term satellite transmissions in the Northern

Territory and South Australia, following Federal Cabinet approval

of funding to allow the Northern Territory Government to purchase

increased satellite services from Imparja.

The decision will benefit thousands of Aboriginal and nonĀ

Aboriginal people throughout Central Australia, who will for the

first time gain access to commercial television services.

The financial viability of Imparja, which is already broadcasting

terrestrially to Alice Springs, had been threatened by the

Northern Territory Government's decision to reverse its earlier

undertaking to purchase a $2 million annual package of

educational and other satellite services from the successful licence applicant.

The NT Government's previously stated plan was taken into account

by the Australian Broadcasting Tribunal in its decision to award

the licence to Imparja.

People in Central Australia have waited long enough for

commercial television, as well as the other services which the

satellite is capable of providing, and which will now be possible

through the Imparja service and the action taken by the Federal

Government.

Cabinet has agreed that a payment of $0.9 million this financial

year and $2 million in subsequent years be made through the

Department of Aboriginal Affairs to the NT Government for the

purchase of a range of services from Imparja.

This will be a significant contribution to the funds needed by

Imparja to lease a 30 watt transponder on an Aussat satellite for

satellite transmissions to all parts of the Central Zone service

area.
