SHADOW SPECIAL MINISTER OF STATE AND SPOKESPERSON ON THE STATUS OF WOMEN

GOVERNMENT WAKES UP TO THE ERROR OF ITS WAYS

It was only a month ago that the Minister assisting the Prime Minister on the Status of Women denied the need for any kind of community impact statement.

This denial followed a question from Senator Vanstone (Opposition Spokesperson on the Status of Women) about the Labor Government being out of touch with the electorate.

Now, suddenly, in today's Melbourne Age, there is a report that Caucus unanimously decided that "Ministers will have to say how any proposed legislation meets Labor's social justice goals of equity, equality, access and participation.

The Caucus demand that those least able to bear the hardship are protected, is an obvious admission that Labor has failed to adequately protect these people up until now.

As women form a large proportion of low income earners and Social Security recipients, presumably the Caucus believes that these Social Jutice Impact Statements will ensure that Labor is put back in touch with these women.

The Caucus is obviously admitting that the Office of Status of Women is appropriately nicknamed the Office of Women of Status and is concerned to ensure that women facing real economic hardship are not forgotten.
