DISPUTES BLOW OUT PARLIAMENT HOUSE COSTS

The Opposition today attacked the Government's failure to control industrial disputes on the new Parliament House site which are running at an annual cost of $16 million.

James Porter, Shadow Minister for Housing and Public Administration, said Government revelations today that it paid out $4m. for industrial disputes between June and August last year was a scandal.

"This massive payout on the Government's own work site explodes the myth of the special relationship Labor claims to have with the unions.

"The average family is having to pay $4-$5 a year to cover the cost of industrial disputes just on this one Government building site.

"The Australian community are sick to death of paying the cost of this Government's support of an outdated outmoded industrial relations system.

"The Prime Minister is out of touch with the community who want the power of unions curbed.

"Unionism should be voluntary and the "no ticket, no start" rule abandoned.

Mr Porter also called for immediate action to re-enact the "no work, no pay" provision within the Public Service.
