BLEWETT MUST COME CLEAN ON TALKS WITH A.M.A. ON DOCTORS * FEES

With the Victorian State elections safely out of the way, the Federal Opposition has called on the Minister for Community Services and Health, Dr Blewett, to deal rationally with the Australian Medical Association on its proposed new fees

schedule.

Shadow Minister for Health, Peter Shack, said in Perth today, "It's hard to escape the conclusion that Dr Blewett's hysterical outbursts early last week condemning a switch to content-based, instead of time based, fees was motivated by political and not practical considerations.

"No doubt hoping that a spot of 'doctor bashing' would help his Victorian Labor colleagues, Dr Blewett publicly slammed the A.M.A. proposal as 'dishonest'.

"But at the same time, and much more quietly, he is also understood to have instructed his Department to enter into discussions on the new fees schedule with the A.M.A.

"If this is so then it is a much more constructive approach than his previous outright refusal to countenance any change.

"Ensuring that quality health care remains within the reach of all Australians is too important an issue to be treated as a mere political point scoring exercise in the ALP's efforts to prop up John Cain for another three years."
