The first ever national strike in Australia's universities and colleges of advanced education will take place this week, the Federal Member for Deakin and Shadow Minister for Education, Julian Beale, said today.

This is another first for Education Minister Dawkins and his education schemes.

The Federation of University and Colleges Staff Associations have called the strike to protest against the Federal Government's education policies.

The Federal Government must abandon the Dawkins' unified education scheme before irreparable harm is done to our leading universities and colleges.

The Prime Minister is a former Rhodes Scholar and industrial relations expert.

He has no alternative but to step in and remove Mr Dawkins from the education ministry.

Mr Dawkins has clearly lost control of the portfolio.

The universities and colleges have called the strike because of their concern about:

. forced retrenchments;

. the arbitrary abolition of courses;

. the destruction of university councils;

. damaging social engineering by the Minister and his department.

Mr Dawkins and his department are too callow and inexperienced to be left in charge of our leading research and teaching institutions.

Only swift action by the Prime Minister can save Australia's tertiary institutions from the disastrous effect of the strike next Wednesday and Thursday.
