to give front bench experience to as many members of the

The newly appointed Shadow Minister for Defence Science and

Personnel, Senator Newman said today that she was delighted to

have the opportunity to serve in the new Shadow Ministry.

"i am particularly pleased to be taking over a newly created

portfolio area. I am also heartened by the warm response I have

received at the news of my appointment."

"in the last two years I have travelled throughout the

country extensively, visiting major defence establishments and

getting to know Servicemen and their families."

"Our Defence force has serious problems. I know the

deficiencies in the Defence area and they largely all come back to

personnel matters", Senator Newman said.

"i relish the opportunity to expose these deficiencies and to

keep up the pressure on the Hawke Government to correct them.
