ASSETS TEST ON AUSTUDY WILL HURT COUNTRY PARENTS AND STUDENTS

Labor is planning to extend its infamous Assets Test to the. Austudy students assistance scheme.

This move will make it harder for parents to help their children gain a complete secondary and tertiary education.

An Austudy Assets Test will hit country parents and students.

There is a major additional cost faced by students who are forced to study away from home. This applies to most students whose parents live in the country, as well as students from the city who study at institutions located in the country.

An Assets Test on student assistance will not only have the same inequalities and administrative problems as the pension assets test.but will be a major hindrance to those who are trying to acquire those skills Australia desperately needs.

An education Assets Test will discriminate against the country because it won't be able to allow for the significant difference in real estate values between the capital cities and regional areas.

Furthermore, Labor has never understood the special capital and· ownership structures of regional businesses and farms.

An Assets test counts the assets of businesses owned by the self-employed, but doesn't, for example, catch the accumulating superannuation credits of employees.

If Labor is fair dinkum about encouraging tertiary education it must re-think this Austudy Assets Test proposal.
