M E D IA RELEASE

THE SENATE

SENATOR TONY MESSNER SHADOW MINISTER FOR COMMUNICATIONS

47/88 _

PRIVATISATION PAPERS - EFFICIENCY SHOULD BE PLACED ABOVE IDEOLOGY

The privatisation papers on Telecom, Australia Post, OTC and Aussat represent a clear case for greater competition and private sector involvement in the telecommunications and postal sectors of the economy.

Senator Tony Messner, Shadow Minister for Communications, said that, in addressing the significant capital needs of Australia's public sector business enterprises, the Government should place the need for greater efficiency above that of any ideological

narrow-mindedness.

To improve the efficiency of these organisations, it is imperative that the Government do more than just tinker with the edges.

What is urgently required in the telecommunications market is a substantial injection of competition and private sector involvement.

Senator Evans1 papers represent an admission that the telecommunications potential of Australia is being impeded by out-dated government controls and regulations.

Australia must take the vital steps towards reform of the telecommunications market now in order to maintain our competitiveness in the rapidly developing South-East Asian region.

On present indications, it appears that the future of our telecommunications industry could be jeopardised as a result of the internal divisions within the Labor Party.

The time for reform and restructuring is now.

The Government must open the telecommunications industry to greater competition and private sector involvement before we slide any further into a third world abyss.
