UNION POWER WINS OVER DEREGULATION OF TELECOM

The Government has been crushed by union pressure and discarded any serious attempt to deregulate Australia's telecommunications system.

Senator Tony Messner, Shadow Minister for Communications, said that by backing down on its initial plans to abolish Telecom's mobile phone monopoly, the Government is putting the interests of the trade union movement above the interests of

telecommunications users.

"The Government has been hijacked by the unions over the future direction of our telecommunications system.

"It appears that the Government's May Economic Statement will contain nothing more than minor changes to Telecom's monopolies.

"This is bad -news for those who wish to see a freer and more competitive market in the rapidly expanding telecommunications industry.

"It is only the basic telecommunications system that should remain the prime responsibility of Telecom.

"The Opposition's policy is to allow new phone services to rapidly expand in order to meet the needs of consumers.

"The Government's continued protection of Telecom's mobile phone monopoly will restrict the future growth of Australia's telecommunications system.

"Once again, the Government appears more concerned about its union mates than the public."
