LEAKED GOVT REPORT REVEALS ADVERTISING ON SBS A CERTAINTY

The final draft of the Government's discussion paper on the SBS reveals that advertising is almost a fait accom p l i .

Senator Tony M e ssner, Shadow Minister for Communications, said that the leaked SBS discussion paper which is due for release in a few weeks, points to advertising as the only way to solve the present funding problem of the SBS.

Despite being told that it has no firm position on the funding question, it seems that the Government has already made up its mind to go ahead with advertising on the SBS.

Senator Evans is trying to pull the greatest swindle on the community by unilaterally deciding to introduce advertising without proper public consultation.

The SBS discussion paper does little to find out exactly what the viewers of the SBS and the broader community want of the SBS.

It seems that the Government has totally ignored the views of the ethnic communities.

The various ethnic councils are concerned that advertising will lead to an end to Government funding to the SBS.

Senator Messner said that the consultant's report attached to the SBS paper seems to be contradictory by stating that there is a market for advertising dollars on the SBS when a number of major advertisers have said it is a worthless proposal.

In meeting with the various ethnic councils over the next two weeks, Senator Evans must take note of their c o n cerns.

It is now nine months since the Government announced the SBS review and yet we are still waiting for the official report.

It is high time that the Government listened to the community and released the SBS paper as soon as possible.
