a t Bat eman i s one o f o n l y 68 new n o n - g o v e r n m e n t s choo l s added t o t h e

F e d e r a l Gover nment ' s r e c u r r e n t f u n d i n g pr ogr am.

" A l t o g e t h e r , o n l y 8 new non- gover nment s chool s i n t h i s S t a t e have been

a b l e t o a t t r a c t r e c u r r e n t f u n d i n g , " Mr Shack s a i d .

" W h i l e I am p l e a s e d f o r Cor pus C h r i s t i , and f o r Ta ngne y p a r e n t s who

w i l l have g r e a t e r e d u c a t i o n a l c h o i c e f o r t h e i r c h i l d r e n , I b e l i e v e t h a t

t h e G o v e r n m e n t s h o u l d be condemned f o r i t s a t t e m p t s t o p r u n e t h e

non- gover nment e d u c a t i o n s e c t o r .

A t a t i m e when demand f o r non - g o v e r n m e n t school p l a c e s f a r o u t s t r i p s

s u p p l y , i t i s r e p r e h e n s i b l e t h a t t h e Hawke G o v e r n m e n t i s t r y i n g t o

s t r a n g l e new i ndependent , s c h o o l s .

T h e s e s c h o o l s owe t h e i r e x i s t e n c e t o t h e d e s i r e o f so many p a r e n t s t o

e x e r c i s e t h e i r r i g h t o f c h o i c e i n e d u c a t i o n . "

s a i d , " f o r i t i s e v i d e n t f r o m r e c e n t f u n d i n g d e c i s i o n s r e l a t i n g t o

n o n - g o v e r n m e n t s c h o o l s t h a t t h e G o v e r n m e n t i s i n t e n t on d o i n g a l l i t

can t o r e s t r i c t t h e devel opment o f t h e s e s c h o o l s . "

Mr Shack s a i d t h a t i n f u r t h e r d e v e l o p i n g t h e C o a l i t i o n ' s E d u c a t i o n

P o l i c y he w i l l be d o i n g a l l t h a t he can t o g i v e b a c k t o p a r e n t s t h e

f r e e d o m t o c h o s e t h e e d u c a t i o n system whi ch b e s t s u i t s them and t h e i r

c h i l d r e n .
