AWB SELECTION COMMITTEE GOES AHEAD

The Minister for Primary Industry, Mr John Kerin, announced today that a Selection Committee had been established to select members for the Australian Wheat Board to operate from 1 October 1985.

The Minister said that the Selection Committee will follow the successful approach used in the meat and livestock industry.

Mr Kerin said that, as with other statutory bodies, the government had based the composition of the Australian Wheat Board on three principle requirements.

"First, the Board has to act corporately and be of workable size. Second, the Board must have a body of expertise necessary to cope with the demands of international trading, and third, Board members must be selected on the basis of merit", Mr Kerin said.

The Minister said that legislation agreed to by the Australian Wheat Growers Federation (AWF) and incorporating these principles will be introduced early in the Budget session of Federal Parliament.

"Under the new legislation, nine of the eleven AWB members will be chosen by the Selection Committee because of their special expertise in wheat growing, finance, marketing and grain handling, storage and distribution.

"Of those nine, six must be wheat growers", he said.

Mr Kerin said that he was very pleased that the Chairman of the Australian Meat and Livestock Industry Selection Committee, Mr Fred Millar, had agreed to chair the AWB Selection Committee. Sir Leslie Price, Chairman of the Australian Wheat Board, will

also serve on the Selection Committee. Mr Kerin said that Sir Leslie will make an invaluable contribution to the Committee's deliberations

Mr Kerin said that other members of the Selection Committee would be as follows:

AWF nominees: Mr Colin Rowe from SA Mr Ian Fletcher from Victoria Mr Athol Roberts from NSW Mr David Wright from Queensland Mr Rob Sewell from WA NFF nominees: Mr John Mackenzie

Mr John Allwright

The Selection Committee will be assisted by a professional executive search consultant.

"The whole purpose of restructuring the AWB is to enable it to trade more effectively and maximise returns to growers", Mr Kerin stated.

"The Committee's approach to selecting members on the basis of their skill will certainly improve Board operations.
