Government decision: frozen peas

PI 85/115 21 June 1985

The Government has decided not to change assistance for local production of frozen peas.

The Acting Minister for Industry, Technology and Commerce, Mr Barry 0. Jones, and the Acting Minister for Primary Industry, Mr Peter Morris, announced this today following consideration of the IAC 1s interim report on frozen peas. *

They said available evidence did not justify action against imports before the IAC's report on longer term assistance for vegetables and vegetable products had been received.

- The IAC had concluded that there was unlikely to be substantial labour shedding or substantial loss of resources in the pea processing industry during the IAC's Vegetables and Vegetable Products Inquiry.

Ministers noted the sensitivities which attach to the horticultural sector and said that this is a matter which will be raised in Ministerial talks with New Zealand later this year.

The Government will be giving careful consideration to the assistance needs of the fresh and processed vegetable industry to ensure its continued long term viability following receipt of the final IAC report due in April 1986.
