VICTORIAN POULTRY BANNED IN ACT

The A c tin g M i n i s t e r f o r P rim ary I n d u s t r y , Mr P e t e r M o r r i s , s a i d

t o d a y t h a t as a c o n se q u e n c e o f t h e o u t b r e a k o f a v i a n i n f l u e n z a

on a p o u l t r y p r o p e r t y i n V i c t o r i a , i t had become n e c e s s a r y t o

t i g h t e n c o n t r o l s o v e r t h e movement o f p o u l t r y and o t h e r

d o m e s ti c b i r d s i n t o t h e A u s t r a l i a n C a p i t a l T e r r i t o r y .

The M i n i s t e r s a i d su ch b i r d s n o r m a lly e n t e r e d t h e ACT t h r o u g h

NSW and NSW had banned th e e n t r y o f p o u l t r y , d o m e s t i c b i r d s and

p o u l t r y p r o d u c t s i n t o t h a t S t a t e from V i c t o r i a . I n c o n j u n c t i o n

w i t h t h i s NSW move, th e M i n i s t e r h a s c o n f i r m e d t h a t p o u l t r y and

d o m e s ti c b i r d s from V i c t o r i a c a n n o t be i n t r o d u c e d i n t o t h e ACT.

Mr M o r r i s so u g h t t h e c o - o p e r a t i o n o f t h e p u b l i c i n r e c o g n i s i n g

t h e need t o p r e v e n t t h e p o s s i b l e s p r e a d o f d i s e a s e and a sk e d

a l l b i r d owners t o s u p p o r t t h e s e c o n t r o l m e a s u r e s .

The M i n i s t e r s a i d t h e ban i s a l r e a d y i n e f f e c t and w i l l s t a n d

u n t i l t h e r i s k o f s p r e a d o f d i s e a s e i s p a s t .

Mr M o r r i s s a i d p o u l t r y p r o d u c t s , e g , e g g s and c h i c k e n meat were

a l s o o f c o n c e rn however i n v e s t i g a t i o n s have shown t h a t th e

T e r r i t o r y ' s s u p p l i e s a r e e i t h e r grown l o c a l l y o r i n t r o d u c e d

from NSW. O f f i c e r s o f t h e D epartm ent o f P r i m a r y I n d u s t r y a r e

a d v i s i n g m ajor s u p p l i e r s o f t h e need t o m a i n t a i n t h e s e s o u r c e s

o f s u p p l y in t h e c u r r e n t c i r c u m s t a n c e s .
