RELEASE MINISTER FOR PRIMARY INDUSTRY

CANBERRA

PI85/278 2 December 1985

INTERIM RESTRICTIONS ON PRAWN TRAWL GEAR

Interim restrictions on maximum headrope length on prawn trawl gear for use in Commonwealth waters between Barrenjoey Point and the NSW/Queensland border have been announced by the Acting Minister for Primary Industry, Mr Brown.

The restrictions come into effect immediately.

"These restrictions will limit the headrope length, which includes the sweeps and other apparatus between the otter boards, to a maximum of 100 metres," Mr Brown said.

The move follows extensive consultation by NSW and Commonwealth officers with industry. It will defuse industry disagreement on fishing methods until a long term solution can be finalised.

The restrictions are necessary also to protect stocks of red spot whiting in the area, currently under study, from possible over-exploitation.

The interim measures will offer some protection to other juvenile trawl fish.

The restrictions will be in force until 1 May, 1986. During the interim, further talks with industry on long term action will take place.
