MEDIA RELEASE BY ROGER SHIPTON MP SHADOW MINISTER FOR ABORIGINAL AFFAIRS

SOCIALIST LEFT FLEXES ITS MUSCLES ON LAND RIGHTS

Federal Member for Hughes, Robert Tickner's' continents today that if the Federal

Government backs off on its uniform land rights policy there will be an

international furore, is evidence that the Socialist Left is flexing its

muscles and not going to be put down, Reger Shipton, Shadow Spokesman

for Aboriginal Affairs, said today.

"This open criticism by the ALP Left adds a new dimension to the already

existing shambles over land rights created by the Hawke Government," .

Mr. Shipton said.

"Gerry Hand has already had his say, now i t ’s Robert Tickner’s turn. I

wonder who will be next?

"Mr. Tickner has given further proof that Mr. Burke 'jumped the gun' and

that the issue has by no means been resolved.

"The Labor Party is deeply divided on this issue and factional war has

now broken out. -

"I repeat my call for a clear statement iron Mr. Holding of what took place

at the Government discussions with Mr. Burke. It now seems that nothing

was agreed at all.

"Aboriginal groups are beginning to realise that Mr. Holding is just a .

'huff and puff' Minister.

"Mr. Holding has a responsibility to all Australians to tell us what is

actually going on.

"The Labor Party has demonstrated hew inept and incapable it is in handling

a sensitive issue," Mr. Shipton said.
