STATEMENT BY MR ROGER SHTPTON. SHADOW MTNTSTER FOR ABORTCSTNAL AFFAIRS

Mr Roger Shipton, Opposition spokesman for Aboriginal Affairs called on the Minister for Aboriginal Affairs to immediately release funds for the South Australian, Queensland and Northern Territory trachoma eye program.

He said that the current Program's funds are practically exhausted. Money that has been promised for the next six months has not yet been relaseed and the situation is critical.

The health and well being of Aborigines is at stake because of the bureaucratic bungling.

The Minister announced two months ago that responsibility for Aboriginal health would be transferred from the Department of Health to the Department of Aboriginal Affairs. It seems that the changeover has been far from smooth. It is

appalling that funds are apparently being denied to the trachoma eye program . Mr Shipton called on the Minister to immediately investigate the matter and release the funds so that this Program could be continued. -
