PRESS RELEASE BY ROGER SHIPTON MP SHADOW MINISTER FOR ABORIGINAL AFFAIRS

STREHLOW COLLECTION '

Roger Shiptoh said today that he had written to the Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, the Hon Clyde Holding, asking him for a guarantee, in writing, that the Federal Government would allow

the Strehlow Collection to be returned safely to Australia.

Mr Shipton said it was imperative that the Federal Government should guarantee that the Collection would not be seized or impounded if it is returned to Australia.

Mr Shipton asked for a guarantee that no action would be taken against anyone importing or receiving the Collection,,either under Customs legislation or Heritage legislation.

He also asked for a guarantee that the Collection would be safe, and would not be claimed under the Heritage legislation.

Mr Shipton said that he uhderstbod that negotiations were at an advanced stage for the return of the Collection to Australia, and the return would only take place if the guarantees he had requested were given.
