PRESS STATEMENT BY PHILIP RUDDOCK - .

SHADOW MINISTER FOR IMMIGRATION AND ETHNIC AFFAIRS

"RECIPROCAL SOCIAL SECURITY AGREEMENTS"

Opposition Spokesman for Immigration and Ethnic Affairs, Philip Ruddock said that the Opposition would be looking very closely at any changes to the Reciprocal Social Security Agreements with Greece and Italy.

Mr Ruddock said he had requested a copy of the proposed agreement from the Government so that the Opposition would have adequate time to examine fully all the implications. . . . - .

"It is important that the Opposition and particularly the ethnic communities involved are properly consulted on the changes. ยท

"We need to be given the full details, particularly the new principles contained in the legislation.

Mr Ruddock said that the Opposition was anxious to obtain clarification especially of the change which extends the eligibility period for a full pension paid overseas from 10 years to 35 years. The Government also has got to make it clear what it means by "working life".

This and other details have to be spelt out.
