CANBERRA AND THE MAY ECONOMIC STATEMENT

w

u

"Will the Minister for Territories, Mr Gordon Scholes, now withdraw his statement of 14 May 1985 that the decisions to sell the Belconnen Mall apd to hand over the development of the Tuggeranong Town Centre to the private sector reflect the Governments real confidence in the future of Canberra?", the

Shadow Minister for, Finance, Senator Peter Rae, said in Canberra today . ' x ‘

"Surely the attack which the Prime Minister Mr Hawke made, last weekend, on such privatisation proposals must mean that the Government has chkogyd its mind and no longer supports such measures. Mr Hawke has described such action as 'cargo cultism'

cind a ' recipe for'lankrchy1 .

"Presumably Mr Schplps will either retract his statements that such measures create a favourable economic environment or will very firmly point; csuf: to his Prime Minister that he is wrong and "not acting in the best interest of the A.C.T."

"The Opposition believes that appropriate privatisation will bring considerably taxpayer and consumer benefits and opportunitites fbr repiployee equity participation. Notwithstanding Mr Hawke's confusion on the subject the Opposition policies, are clear", Senator Rae concluded.
