THE SENATE

HAWKE'S CYNICISM HITS DISABLED AUSTRALIANS

The Hawke Government's complete lack of regard for Australians in need

has been demonstrated by the conflict between the Prime Minister and

Treasurer over whether the disabled will be provided with exemption

from the proposed consumption tax for aids and appliances.

Senator Tony Messner - the Shadow Minister for Community Services -

said it also revealed the extent of the Hawke Government's cynicism.

"There is no doubt that Mr Hawke canvassed the possibility of exemptions

for aids and appliances from the proposed tax, and there is equally no

doubt that Mr Keating firmly rejected the suggestion."

"It's like a routine by a pair of confidence tricksters: one plays a

sympathetic role and the other the role of a real hardcase."

"Mr Hawke may believe that such a routine is great politics and might

allow him to regain his title as Australia's Greatest Loved Politician,

but its cynicism shows a complete lack of regard for Australians with

disabilities."

The fact is that the costs that disabled Australians face in obtaining

aids and appliances to assist them in every day activities are going to

increase under Labor's tax proposal."

"The Hawke Government has often portrayed itself in the past as a governĀ

ment particularly sympathetic to disadvantaged Australians. Its past

actions combined'withiifesffallure : in this --matter clearly shows how false

that image is."

"Disabled Australians must not be made to bear the burden of the Hawke

Government's tax proposals. The aids and appliances are after all used

to provide such people with the ability to carry out tasks that other

Australians take for granted."
