MEDIA RELEASE 10 FEBRUARY 1985

JOINT STATEMENT BY THE OPPOSITION SPOKESMAN ON TRADE HONOURABLE TOM MCVEIGH MP AND THE OPPOSITION SPOKESMAN ON THE PUBLIC SERVICE DAVID CONNALLY MP

SMALL BUSINESSES ARE FATALITY OF PUBLIC SERVICE ROW

THE FEDERAL OPPOSITION TODAY WARNED THE GOVERNMENT THAT IF IT COULD NOT RESOLVE ITS DISPUTE WITH THE PUBLIC SERVICE UNIONS IN THE IMMEDIATE FUTURE, HUNDREDS OF SMALL BUSINESSES WOULD SUFFER DEVASTATING FINANCIAL LOSSES.

IN A JOINT STATEMENT ISSUED TODAY OPPOSITION SPOKESMAN ON TRADE MR TOM MCVEIGH AND OPPOSITION SPOKESMAN ON THE PUBLIC SERVICE MR CONNALLY SAID IT WAS EASY FOR THE GOVERNMENT TO STAGE A"SHERATON STYLE" RAID ON CUSTOMS OFFICERS TO RETRIEVE '

LOST REVENUE BUT SMALL BUSINESSES HAD NO SUCH ACTION OPEN TO THEM TO RETRIEVE DELAYED STOCK. .

THEY SAID THERE WAS CURRENTLY A 24 DAY DELAY ON RECEIVAL ON IMPORTS THROUGH THE SYDNEY WHARVES, A 6 DAY DELAY THROUGH THE SYDNEY AIRPORT AND AN 8 DAY DELAY THROUGH THE MELBOURNE AIRPORT.

DESPITE THEIR PROMISE THAT NO ONE EXCEPT THE GOVERNMENT WOULD SUFFER, THE LIVELIHOODS OF MANY ORDINARY AUSTRALIANS IS NOW' ENDANGERED. .

THEY ASKED WHAT THE GOVERNMENT OR PUBLIC SERVICE UNIONS COULD OFFER IN THE WAY OF COMPENSATIONS TO THOSE SMALL BUSINESSES NOW FACING BANKRUPTCY AS A RESULT OF UNION ACTIONS.

"NEITHER THE GOVERNMENT OR THE UNIONS MADE ANY SPECIAL PROVISIONS TO ENSURE THAT SMALL BUSINESSES, WHO ARE PARTICULARLY VULNERABLE TO STOP SUCH DISRUPTIONS, WERE ABLE TO CARRY ON NORMAL TRADING OPERATIONS." ' _ .

"TO ADD INJUSTICE TO INJUSTICE A N.S.W. STATE AUTHORITY IS CHARGING DEMORRAGE TO BUSINESSES FOR THE PRIVILEGE OF HAVING THEIR STOCK HELD UP AT THE WHARVES," THEY SAID.

"AS THE GOVERNMENT HAS BEEN UNABLE TO RESOLVE THE DISPUTE WITH THEIR PUBLIC SERVANTS THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD NOW PROVIDE EITHER IMMEDIATE COMPENSATION TO THOSE BUSINESSES IN FINANCIAL DIFFICULTIES AS A DIRECT RESULT OF THE DISPUTE OR PREVAIL UPON THEIR CUSTOMS OFFICERS TO FACILITATE THE MOVEMENT OF IMPORTS DESTINED FOR BUSINESSES" THEY SAID.
