HON. J OHN MOORE. M.P. FEDERAL MEMBER FOR RYAN

MEDIA RELEASE

JOHN MOORE, SHADOW MINISTER FOR COMMUNICATIONS - 14th March, 1985

John Moore, Shadow Minister for Communications today sharply

criticised the Minister for Communication, Mr. Duffy’s ineffectual

remarks concerning the sloppy operations of Australia Post,

particularly in its New South Wales operations.

Mr. Moore said: "The Government must end its honeymoon with

the Postal Unions and stop pussy footing around with Australian

postal services.

At present Australia Post management does not have the power to

stand down those employees who refuse to work. The Government

must reintroduce the "no work - no pay" legislation which it

repealed in November 1983. Having been given this power,

management must be given a time limit of say 6 months to lift

its game and resolve the present dispute. If it cannot, then

it 'must be replaced with a team who can achieve an effective

postal system. .

There is at present millions of dollars worth of high technology

equipment laying idle as a result of disputation over the decision

to decentralise the mail processing centre at Redfern.

This is causing serious delays which as. well as costing business

thousands of dollars, is denying the general public the efficient

postal service they are entitled to expect in relation to the

, high prices being charged. .

The Minister cannot adopt his ostrich approach to this running

sore of industrial unrest in this vital Public Utility.

2

He must act immediately to resolve it, or resign.

I am not "Union Bashing", as fault must lie on both sides to

this dispute. However nothing will be achieved while the.

present Government continues to adopt its "sacred cow" approach

to the Unions which seem to be able to hold the people of

Australia to ransom without fear of Government intervention.
