The O ppositio n L e ad e r, Mr Andrew Peacock, s a id today th e T r e a s u r e r ^ / appeared to be ta k in g on some o f th e e r r a t i c b e h av io u ra l aspects o f th e

Prime M in is te r in h is la t e s t a tta c k on th e farm community.

Mr Peacock was r e fe r r in g to Mr K e a tin g 's c la im y e s te rd a y th a t

a $1 b i l l i o n plus s h o r t f a ll in p ro v is io n a l ta x re c e ip ts could be caused

by ta x evasion and avoidance by farm ers and p ro p e rty owners.

"This is a d is g u s tin g a tta c k on s e c tio n s o f th e community w ith o u t

evidence to back up th e c la im ," Mr Peacock s a id .

"The Government sim ply cannot p ic k ta r g e t ta x fig u re s o u t o f the

a i r and th e n , when they a re not reached, go around accusing some members o f the community o f a vo id in g t h e ir tax r e s p o n s ib ilit ie s .

"Mr K e a tin g 's ir r e s p o n s ib le , unw arranted and unsupported a tta c k on the farm ing and p ro p e rty owning secto rs o f th e community cannot go u n c h a lle n g e d ," he s a id .

" I t has a l l the earmarks o f the a tta c k by th e Prime M in is t e r , Mr

Hawke, on in d iv id u a l c r ic k e te r s who have signed up to go on the 'r e b e l '

c r ic k e t to u r o f South A fr ic a .

"We a l l agree th a t the in d iv id u a l c r ic k e te r s should n o t go on

the to u r South A fr ic a and th a t the Government should t r y to persuade th e

c r ic k e te r s in v o lv e d not to go.

"But t h is does not mean th a t the Prime M in is te r should stoop

to personal abuse o f the in d iv id u a ls in v o lv e d .

" L ik e w is e , we a l l agree th a t ta x evasion and avoidance is wrong

and in c re a se s th e burden on honest taxpayers in th e community.

"But th is does not mean th a t the T re a s u re r should make unw arranted and unsupported a tta c k s on s ec tio n s o f th e community when he has no hard evidence on the supposed ta x a v o id a n c e ."

Mr Peacock said the f a c t was th a t th e Deputy Leader o f the

O ppositio n and Shadow T re a s u re r, Mr Howard, had p re d ic te d th e l i k e l y s h o r t f a ll in r e c e ip ts th a t the Government has o n ly now d is co v e red .

"The T re a s u re r accepted the e s tim a te s p u t to him by h is departm ent and the T a x a tio n O ffic e and is f i n a l l y re s p o n s ib le when those fig u r e s a re

e it h e r achieved o r not a c h ie v e d ," he s a id .

"He Should come up w ith the evidence to back up h is s ta te m e n ts , o r shut up and a p o lo g ise to those sec tio n s o f th e community on which he

has c a s t such a p u b lic s lu r ." 7
